What is a Facelift?

Though many different types of procedures can be done to rejuvenate the tissues of the face, the facelift is the gold standard in modern plastic surgery. A facelift (facelift surgery or rhytidectomy) is a surgical, facial, rejuvenation procedure designed to diminish the visible signs of aging in the face. Facelift surgery is also used to treat signs of aging in the neck.

Why do people get a Facelift?

Our face presents the most visible signs of our self, including our personality, vivacity and beauty. Unfortunately, our face is also one of the first places to show the signs of aging long before we feel old. Genetic, environmental and metabolic factors influence the degree and extent our tissues age. Loss of collagen and fat causes skin thinning and wrinkle formation, which serves to make our faces appear older than we are or feel. In Florida exposure to the sun can exacerbate this protection and speed up the aging process.

Based on your specific needs and anatomic features, the doctors at the Plastic Surgery Institute (PSI) of Miami will design and perform a procedure unique to your circumstances and aesthetic goals. A standard or a short scar procedure may be chosen depending on the extent of skin laxity and loss of elasticity. The muscles of the neck may also be tightened in order to restore the jawline and cervicomental angle.

The deep tissues of the face are tightened or repositioned in a way to restore a youthful appearance. At the same time, you may choose to do fat injections to restore volume to your face. Other procedures such as eyelid rejuvenation and skin resurfacing are commonly done in conjunction with a facelift procedure to create a balanced and completely revitalized appearance. A facelift can be done under local (twilight) anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on your needs and tolerances.

How Long does a Facelift Take?

The facelift procedure generally requires 2 and 3 hours to complete. Afterwards you are kept for overnight observation or sent home with a caregiver. Recovery time depends on the extent of the operation, and can be as short as a week for a mini-facelift, or up to 3 weeks for more extensive procedures.
