What is a Facelift?
Though many different types of procedures can be done to rejuvenate the tissues of the face, the facelift is the gold standard in modern plastic surgery. A facelift (facelift surgery or rhytidectomy) is a surgical, facial, rejuvenation procedure designed to diminish the visible signs of aging in the face. Facelift surgery is also used to treat signs of aging in the neck.
Here is the full interview conducted with Dr. Marcelo Ghersi on what you can expect when you are ready for facelift surgery ”
A facelift is one of the most common procedures we do in plastic surgery. The term “Facelift” encompasses many different techniques we use to rejuvenate the face. My Goal as a plastic surgeon is to find out what my patient’s aspirations are in term of their needs to rejuvenating themselves, then assessing what their skin is like and what physical examination reveals. Then coming up with a treatment strategy that involves an operation which targets those particular goals to give them the best possible end result. In regards to face lifting and rejuvenation procedures of the face, I was very lucky to train with some of the world leaders in this operation in my earlier years. This experience in addition to the 100’s of cases I have done in my private practice have really allowed me to focus on this particular procedure and really give my patients natural, long lasting and consistent results. The key to long lasting and natural results in face lifting surgery is to have excellent communication. Communication between the patient and plastic surgeon and that all starts in the initial consultation. We use that time to really talk to our patients and find out exactly what their goals are. After finding out what their goals are we do an extensive evaluation of their face and determine what are the specific techniques that would be best suited to address their particular needs. After doing a facelift operation a patient can expect to look younger, look invigorated, to look more energized. People they know, their friends, their relatives will compliment them and tell them how much better they look without necessarily noticing they had an operation done. The recovery after a facelift really depends on the extent of the operation and at what other procedures are done adjunctively. Usually the down time is anywhere between 2 and 3 weeks after which time patients can go back to resuming their normal activities, take pictures and even engage in social functions.”
Why do people seek a face lift doctor?
Our face presents the most visible signs of our self, including our personality, vivacity and beauty. Unfortunately, our face is also one of the first places to show the signs of aging long before we feel old. Genetic, environmental and metabolic factors influence the degree and extent our tissues age. Loss of collagen and fat causes skin thinning and wrinkle formation, which serves to make our faces appear older than we are or feel. In Florida exposure to the sun can exacerbate this protection and speed up the aging process.
How is a Facelift Performed?
Based on your specific needs and anatomic features, the doctors at the Plastic Surgery Institute (PSI) of Miami will design and perform a procedure unique to your circumstances and aesthetic goals. A standard or a short scar procedure may be chosen depending on the extent of skin laxity and loss of elasticity. The muscles of the neck may also be tightened in order to restore the jawline and cervicomental angle.
The deep tissues of the face are tightened or repositioned in a way to restore a youthful appearance. At the same time, you may choose to do fat injections to restore volume to your face. Other procedures such as eyelid rejuvenation and skin resurfacing are commonly done in conjunction with a facelift procedure to create a balanced and completely revitalized appearance. A facelift can be done under local (twilight) anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on your needs and tolerances.
How Long does a Facelift Take?
A Miami facelift procedure generally requires 2 and 3 hours to complete. Afterwards, after the facelift surgery, you are kept for overnight observation or sent home with a caregiver. Recovery time depends on the extent of the operation, and can be as short as a week for a mini-facelift, or up to 3 weeks for more extensive procedures.
