We understand that sometimes the Rhinoplasty procedure is merely a preference for personal aesthetic improvement, and sometimes it’s necessary based on health problems usually involving the nasal cavity. Either way, we want each and every one of our patients to be completely satisfied with the results of their nose job, and one of the ways we ensure that is by educating them on the preparation of the procedure, on the procedure itself, and on post-surgery recovery.
We have a wealth of Rhinoplasty before and after pictures on our web site, and we always recommend that our patients peruse those to see the variations of what our practice is capable of, especially when we have patients who observe our advice in terms of how to get the best “after”. Believe it or not, your diet is a huge factor in how well you recover.
You might be wondering… of all things we could recommend you do in terms of proper preparation for amazing results, why diet? It’s not very often that a medical practice does put extra emphasis on the proper nutrition and foods to eat beyond the vital bare minimum, but at Plastic Surgery Institute Miami, we believe that your holistic health and lifestyle efforts are just as important as what we do. In other words, we provide the opportunity for fantastic results, but we also believe that the best results lie in your hands.
Your efforts in following a healthy diet and making sure that you stay hydrated will allow you to proactively support the body’s natural detoxification process, minimize inflammation, encourage proper digestion and stimulate good blood circulation- all things vital to healing well. Poor nutrition habits will do the opposite: keep toxins in the body, maximize inflammation, wreak havoc on your digestion in a pivotal time of healing, and hinder good circulation. How can anyone expect to heal with great results with those health conditions?
In the weeks leading up to your rhinoplasty procedure, do your best to maintain an appropriate intake of vegetables and fruits, many of which are rich in antioxidants and fiber. Err on the side of caution in terms of your fruit intake; in other words, don’t simply get full on fruits that are high in sugar beyond anything else. In addition, be sure to eat lean protein in order to help curb your unhealthy fat intake while building muscle mass. Otherwise, eat foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep tissue supple. Lastly, hydration is key when it comes to good results: you must drink at least 64 ounces of water every day to help flush toxins, support hydration, and improve the physiological processes.
It’s not just enough to eat what’s good for you, though. In addition to following our recommended “do eat” guidelines, we want you also to follow our recommended “don’t eat” guidelines. Stay away from foods with little to no nutritional value, like processed simple carbohydrates – pasta, white bread, pizza. Bear in mind that salt in larger quantities can increase your blood pressure and cause dehydration, so it’s best to use it sparingly. Unhealthy fats could contribute to a more serious issue (like heart disease), so it’s best to avoid them all together. Lastly, sugar can activate glycatin, which can cause skin to become hard and rigid – not at all helpful for the healing process.
For the Rhinoplasty, there are definitely foods to avoid post-surgery (other than foods that are bad for you any time). First and foremost, for the first several days after surgery, do your best to avoid spicy and salty foods, as these foods can increase swelling and cause major discomfort in the nasal passage. After a few days and as they feel ready, patients may be able to introduce spicy foods back into the diet very gradually.
