Getting Ready for Rhinoplasty – a Helpful Guide
In the interest of making sure your mind and your body are both at ease before you start the procedure, we’ve compiled a list of actions you must take before you go ‘under the knife. Let’s start at the beginning: vitamins.
Cut out the Vitamins
If you take an vitamins, such as Vitamin E and herbal supplements, you should make sure to cut them out of your regimen at least two weeks before your rhinoplasty, and failing to do so would be a definite mistake. In addition to that you will want to stop taking any aspirin or ibuprofen as these serve as blood thinners and could cause complications with the surgery.
As a physician we would actually advocate that you stop smoking anyway, but realistically you will want to cut it out at least four weeks prior to surgery as nicotine can hinder the rate at which you are able to heal.
Stock your House
After your surgery you’re going to have trouble doing things for yourself. Naturally you will want to employ the help of others, but you will still need to make sure that you have certain items at your disposal. First of all, you need to stock up on prescription drugs. Anything that you absolutely need to take, make sure you have them at your home so that you can easily use them following your surgery. The same will go for virtually any other item you might need, and you’re not going to be able to leave your home to shop or stock up for some time. Keep soups and soft fruits on hand as you will be unable to eat fully solid meals at first. Finally, remember to have lip balm and cool beverages on hand as your mouth will become very dry during the first few weeks following your surgery.
It is important you accept the fact that you cannot do everything on your own. This is a critical part of undergoing the surgery if you want to survive the post-surgery period. Speak with a friend or relative and make them understand that during the first few weeks you are going to need their help. This will include chores around the house, feeding pets, and taking care of general upkeep. Don’t try to do it all alone after your surgery – it just isn’t going to work.
Finally, make sure you arrange for transportation following your surgery. The last thing you want to do is attempt to drive home on your own after you have undergone the effects of anesthesia. Be smart, be safe, and take the steps needed to enjoy your new face.
