What is Breast Augmentation?
It pleases many of our patients to learn that breast augmentation surgery is much simpler than it was even a decade ago. We can now perform the breast augmentation procedure in an hour or less. Patients see results shortly after surgery and steadily improve until they complete a six-week recovery. Results typically include:
- A boost in confidence and self-esteem
- Improvement in breast size, profile, volume, symmetry, and appeal
- A curvier silhouette and more feminine look
The great thing about modern breast enhancement surgery is it is simple, safe, and results last a very long time. In the past, women needed to have their implants replaced every decade. But now, implants can often remain safely in place for twenty-five years or more without any issues whatsoever.
Why People Choose Breast Augmentation – PSI Miami
Every breast augmentation patient has her own personal reasons for choosing to undergo surgery. Many women:
- Feel that their breasts are not really proportional to their body or are too flat
- Feel self-conscious about their small cup size and have very specific ideas about implant size
- Want more cleavage to help them feel more vibrant, voluptuous, sexy, and feminine
- Seek augmentation surgery for reconstructive purposes or to correct asymmetry
Regardless of their reason for having surgery, women always have the same goal: natural-looking, more attractive breasts. Plastic Surgery Institute (PSI) of Miami helps women reach this goal because our surgeons and staff realize that the choice to undergo breast enhancement surgery is very personal; what matters most is that your results make you feel great about your body and the way your breasts look and feel.
Who is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation procedure is ideal for women who are looking to increase the size of their breasts, have unevenly sized breasts, or have sagging breasts. Women interested in breast augmentation must undergo an examination, evaluation, and consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon before being approved for surgery.
Patients should also be in reasonably good health and have realistic expectations about the breast augmentation procedure. Your plastic surgeon will take all of your health concerns and issues into consideration when evaluating your case.
Your surgeon will need to consider your health and other factors, such as any bleeding disorders or infections you may have, your medications and lifestyle habits (smoking and alcohol use), as well as other health-related concerns including potential issues with your breast tissue. This helps to ensure your safety and promote proper incision healing.
Women should not undergo breast augmentation if they:
- Have an ongoing infection
- Are undergoing cancer treatments
- Are currently breastfeeding
- Have cancer or pre-cancer
- Have other serious ongoing health issues
Is There an Age Limit for Breast Implants?
Many young patients are anxious to enhance their breasts as soon as possible. However, most reputable plastic surgeons follow FDA guidelines for breast augmentation age requirements and restrict silicone implants to patients 22 years of age or older and saline implant for patients 18 and older.
These days, most patients prefer the more natural look and feel of silicone implants. They are softer, have a more authentic shape, and are less likely to develop rippling. While it is possible for plastic surgeons to provide younger patients with silicone implants if they sign a waiver or if they are seeking breast implant surgery for reconstructive reasons, the accepted legal age for breast implants made from silicone gel remains 22.
Breast implant age requirements are based on the FDA’s research and reflect the fact that breast implants are not necessarily lifetime devices. Over time, the implants may wear out and rupture. When this occurs, the salt water solution in saline implants will simply absorb into the body harmlessly. Silicone implants, on the other hand, will remain in the breast, potentially causing complications and requiring removal and implant replacement (if the patient chooses).
The good news is that modern implants are safer and last longer than ever. Your surgeon will discuss all the pros and cons of each option with you during your consultation so that you have all the information you need to make a decision that’s right for you.
So what is a good age to get a breast augmentation? Typically, once your breasts’ development is complete and you are old enough to safely qualify for the implant type of your choice. If you are 18 and you would like to receive silicone implants, it may be best to wait a few years and get the implants you really want.
How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost with PSI Miami?
For patients, cost is a major factor when considering whether or not to undergo breast augmentation in Miami. That’s understandable since surgical costs can be high and many patients are unable to pay for the procedure in full up front. However, finding affordable breast implants doesn’t mean choosing based solely on price and going for “bargain” cheap breast implants. Miami has a wide range of options when it comes to plastic surgery, and choosing your surgeon by picking the cheapest provider is usually a recipe for disaster.
In the long run, cheap breast implants in Miami can end up being more expensive than implants from an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. Many patients end up with complications and need to have a revision procedure or have their implants removed altogether.
Safety risks can also outweigh the benefits of choosing overly cheap breast implants in Florida. While some reputable providers do offer Miami breast augmentation specials, it’s important to do your research when choosing a surgeon and prioritize skill over price. You don’t want to end up with an infection or a poor result that could have been avoided.
Breast implants cost what they cost because performing the procedure correctly takes years and years of specialized training. Affordable breast implants offer patients a fair price, peace of mind, and the safety of having the procedure performed by an expert doctor. At PSI Miami, we try to make implants affordable for every woman and work with our patients to arrange financing.
When looking for a plastic surgeon, look at their credentials, past work, and reviews, and then ask about the price.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure
You and your surgeon will work together to customize your surgery to meet your goals. Depending on your desired look, you can add volume, shape, projection, and cup size to your breasts. You will also choose your size and decide between silicone or saline implants. You can see your improvements shortly after surgery and final results after a six-week recovery.
An expertly performed procedure. Breast augmentation surgery requires advanced training, specialized knowledge, and extensive experience. When it comes to your body and aesthetics, only a highly-trained surgeon has the eye, knowledge, and technical surgical skill sets to perform a breast augmentation procedure.
At PSI Miami, our breast augmentation plastic surgeons are surgery experts. They have undergone the extensive additional training required to provide exceptional care in all areas of plastic surgery, including advanced techniques in breast reconstruction, breast revision, and breast augmentation. Although we customize your surgery to meet all your goals and desires, general breast augmentation procedure steps include:
Anesthesia can vary from local, which affects only a specific part of the body, to general anesthesia, which puts the patient to sleep during the procedure. PSI Miami surgeons prefer to use general anesthesia during breast augmentation to keep patients as comfortable as possible during surgery.
We make only one incision in each breast. We carefully hide the incision under the crease of the breast (called the inframammary fold), or the transaxillary (in the armpit area), depending on the approach your PSI surgeon feels is right for you.
We place implants into the pockets created by the incisions. Your surgeon can place implants above the muscle (known as subglandular) or below (known as submuscular), depending on your specific needs. The kind of implants can also vary, according to your needs and desired outcomes. Your PSI Miami surgeon will discuss the pros and cons of the different kinds of breast implants that are available.
Your surgery will only take about an hour.
I gave Dr. Marcelo Ghersi this rating because I get nothing but compliments, feel great and experienced the smoothest, stress free process I’ve ever dealt with. I researched around town on different plastic surgeons, but then I got a referral from someone that I know and admire. She also got her breast augmentation done with Dr. Ghersi and they look amazing!
Recovering from Breast Augmentation in Miami
Your recovery will take approximately six weeks, starting as soon as your surgery is over. Our fully-accredited surgical facility provides you with a comfortable, private, discreet, and of course, safe place to recover. We take you from our world-class operating room to a spacious and quiet recovery area. Recovery nurses and staff make sure you feel no discomfort or pain, and peacefully wake up. Your family and friends wait for you in a comfortable waiting area. After you are awake and alert and your discomfort is under control, a family member or friend can drive you home. A general recovery timeline is:
- 2-3 days after surgery
Prescription or over-the-counter pain medications manage light to moderate discomfort. A surgical bra or compression bandage supports the breast implants, reduces swelling, and protects each incision. It is okay to take a shower at this time, taking care not to disturb the incisions.
- 1 week after surgery
You can resume non-strenuous work and light activities. Heavy lifting and strenuous activities should be avoided. The first post-operative appointment occurs during this time. We check the breast implants and each incision to make sure they are healing well.
- 2 weeks after surgery
Daily activities are resumed. Vigorous exercise should be avoided. It is okay to take a bath.
- 4 weeks after surgery
Strenuous exercise that does not involve the chest may be resumed.
- 6 weeks after surgery
Exercise without restrictions is resumed. Any type of push-up bra may be worn. Breast implants are fully settled. Each incision is fully healed. The final result can be seen at this time, and patients can enjoy their new look fully.
Different Types of Breast Enhancement
For women who would like a more natural enhancement method, there are other procedures available. A fat transfer breast augmentation procedure removes unwanted fat from the buttock and/or hip areas, purifies it, and then adds it to your own existing breast tissue to increase volume. Your surgeon does not make an incision in your breasts. This process is more natural than using breast implants as we use your own fat to increase the size of your breasts. If you have a fat transfer breast augmentation procedure, it will also take about an hour.
Many patients ask if saline or silicone gel implants are better. The answer is that they are both great implant options. You and your surgeon will work together to choose an implant that meets your needs. In many cases, we recommend a newer type of implant made from silicone, called a gummy bear implant.
Saline breast implants are implants filled with a sterile saltwater solution. This solution is sealed inside a silicone surgical casing. In the extremely rare event that a saline implant leaks, it does not cause damage and can easily be replaced. Saline implants are put into place before being filled, reducing the size of the incision. They are an ideal option for younger patients, including older teens.
Silicone gel breast implants last longer than saline implants because they are denser and thicker. They also allow more movement and flow inside the implant casing. Many women feel that this offers a more natural movement, look, and feel. Patients must be 18 years old to receive silicone breast implants if they sign a waiver, 22 years old without a waiver.
Gummy Bear Implants
Most people know gummy bear breast implants for their shape-retaining properties. They are made of a very thick silicone gel that retains its shape within a silicone casing. They are considerably more durable than saline and traditional silicone gel implants. Gummy bear breast implants are actually the most common type of modern implant because they offer a natural look and feel with fewer risks of rupture complications.
Many women experience drooping of the breasts (ptosis) after pregnancy and breastfeeding, or due to the natural aging process. Over time, the sagging can become severe and cause a woman to feel self-conscious and embarrassed about the appearance of her chest. In these cases, breast sagging or pseudoptosis can be corrected with a breast lift. A breast lift or pseudoptosis breast lift is a surgical procedure performed to elevate the breasts to a more youthful position. Many women choose to combine a breast lift with implants to improve the position and volume of the breasts in one surgery.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do I have to have my implants replaced every ten years?
While breast implants can fail, that does not mean they will. There is actually no hard and fast rule about breast implant lifespans as they can last indefinitely. Modern implants are more durable and more likely to last than earlier models.
Is breast augmentation linked to breast cancer?
Not really. Studies have shown that while it is possible, the chances of developing breast cancer from textured breast implants are incredibly slim. Roughly two out of every million women may develop breast cancer in connection with breast implants; however, the specific kind of breast cancer in question also has a 90% cure rate.
Where is the best breast augmentation procedure performed?
A breast augmentation procedure can be performed in the office, in an ambulatory surgical center, or in a hospital setting. For breast augmentation, PSI Miami boasts a state-of-the-art surgical center with a full complement of highly trained and qualified staff.
Are there ways to augment and increase the size of my breasts without implants?
There are natural options for women who want to increase the size of their breasts without using manufactured breast implants. Your surgeon can advise you about fat injections and other breast enlargement options that do not require an incision.
Other procedures for breast enhancement include breast lift, a surgical breast rejuvenation procedure that can restore the appearance of the breasts after significant weight loss, breastfeeding, or the regular aging process.
What is the difference between a breast revision surgery and breast augmentation?
A breast revision procedure is a second surgery to remove implants or correct any complications that arose because of previous breast surgery. Breast augmentation is used to refine the shape, size, and projection of the breasts to create aesthetically pleasing, symmetrical and fuller breasts.
Are there risks associated with breast augmentation?
Although breast augmentation procedures are considered very safe, there are possible complications, as there are with any kind of surgical procedure. Complications can include:
- Excessive bleeding
- Delayed incision healing
- Unwanted scar tissue
- Misshapen or hardened breasts
- Implant failure
- Numbness of the breasts or nipples
- Breast pain
- Capsular contracture
- Other risks associated with anesthesia
Your surgeon will go over all the possible complications one-by-one during your initial consultation. The overwhelming majority of patients find potential results far outweigh the minimal risks associated with surgery.
What should I look for in a breast augmentation surgeon in Miami?
No matter what kind of surgery you are considering, it is always important to find an expert plastic surgeon with the right training and experience to provide you with the best possible care.
Do I have to stop smoking before and after my procedure?
Smoking slows down the body’s healing processes and increases the chances of infection. Your surgeon will strongly recommend that you stop smoking before and after your surgery to ensure your safety and maximize your results.
Is PSI Miami physician-owned?
Unlike other plastic surgery groups, PSI Miami is entirely doctor-owned—businessmen and investors have no say in your health and safety.
