Liposuction, which is also known as lipoplasty or body contouring surgery, is a type of cosmetic surgery that eliminates small bulges of fat from a wide variety of body areas such as the buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts, back, arms and neck. Liposuction is considered one of the safest and most popular cosmetic procedures. You should consider liposuction in Miami if diet and exercise are not working to reduce localized areas of fat.
Good candidates for liposuction are people who:
* Have good skin elasticity and a minimal amount of loose skin.
* Have localized deposits of fat in their abdomen, arms, thighs or neck, which may be the result of heredity and thus are not reduced with exercise and diet.
* Are no more than 20 pounds overweight.
* Have a stable weight. If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight or gain weight due to pregnancy, you should postpone having liposuction.
* Are in good general health and have a positive attitude and realistic expectations.
How Liposuction is Performed
Liposuction removes fat from your body using suction. Small, thin, blunt-tipped tubes are inserted through small cuts in the skin. Your plastic surgeon moves these tubes under your skin to target fat deposits and then suction them out. Within that general procedure there are two main techniques for liposuction in Miami:
Tumescent liposuction. With this technique, your surgeon will inject a solution made up of saline, lidocaine anesthetic and epineprhine into your fatty areas before the fat is removed. The combined components of the solution help the surgeon remove the fat more easily, helps reduce blood loss, and eases post-procedural pain.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction. With ultrasound-assisted liposuction, ultrasonic energy is used to help loosen and melt fat, which is then removed from your body.
Depending on the type of liposuction you choose, you may be able to have it done as an inpatient procedure at a doctor’s office or surgery center and go home the same day. If large amounts of fat will be removed, the procedure will be done in a hospital, and you may need to stay overnight. Either way, you will be given an anesthetic. For the removal of smaller amounts of fat you will be most likely given a local anesthetic. For removal of larger amounts of fat, you will most likely be given general anesthesia, which will “knock you out” during the procedure. The length of the procedure depends on how much fat is being removed.
You’ve opted to have liposuction in Miami performed because you want your body to look better. But what about scarring from the procedure? Because liposuction incisions are small, the scars are also small. Also your physician will place the incisions in hidden areas if at all possible. Even if it is not possible for your physician to place the incisions in hidden areas, you should know that most liposuction scars fade over time until they become barely perceptible.
Recovery and Results
If your liposuction surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, you should be able to return to work within a few days and get back to all of your normal activities within two weeks. For more extensive liposuction performed in a hospital the recovery will be slightly longer. Either way, you will experience bruising, swelling, and soreness for at least a few weeks.
You’ll notice immediate results from the liposuction surgery as the swelling fades, since fat cells have been permanently removed. That doesn’t mean, however, that your results are permanent. If you do gain some weight, it won’t migrate to the area where you had the liposuction performed. But to keep your new sleeker shape and new weight after liposuction, you’ll need to follow a diet and exercise plan that your physician will set up for you.
Selecting a Surgeon
It’s important to choose a highly trained surgeon, one that you can trust. At The Plastic Surgery Institute of Miami, all of our liposuction doctors in Miami are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Our physicians have undergone the most rigorous training and testing available to ensure that you are getting the safest and most reliable liposuction surgery available.
During your initial consultation, you will discuss your cosmetic goals with your surgeon. Your surgeon will evaluate you as a candidate for liposuction, clarify what liposuction can do for you and patiently answer all of your questions. You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your complete medical history, including information about allergies, current medications, previous surgeries and past and present medical conditions, including high blood pressure, thyroid problems or diabetes.
Based on your goals and your physical characteristics, your liposuction doctor in Miami will recommend a type of procedure, discuss any possible risks or complications, explain the outcomes that you can expect and explain what to expect after the surgery. Your physician will also discuss your financial investment. Because liposuction is a cosmetic procedure most insurance companies will not pay for you to have it performed. Fortunately, The Plastic Surgery Institute of Miami offers completely affordable liposuction in Miami.
